Decortication of vocal cords

DEFINITION:

The vocal cords are a part of the phonation system. They are responsible for the production of the voice.

Decortication of vocal cords surgery involves removing the damaged mucosa of the vocal cords.

DESCRIPTION:

Decortication of vocal cords is made under general anesthesia and generally with a surgical microscope
BEFORE THE PROCEDURE

Patients should undergo a preliminary test to evaluate the specific characteristics of their intervention.

Furthermore, they must undergo a standard preoperative study that includes blood tests, electrocardiogram, etc.

Also, if they have any chronic illness or regularly take medications, especially anticoagulants, they should inform the surgeon before surgery.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE:

Patients may experience pain and swelling in the affected area, although these symptoms will gradually disappear.

It is better not to talk or make sounds the days after the intervention. After a while patients should follow a vocal cords rehabilitation programme.

Patients should follow a liquid diet and avoid smoking for a day or two.
