Total Knee Replacement

A total knee replacement consists of replacing a damaged knee joint with a prosthesis that will allow the patient to improve their quality of life. It is a very common procedure with a high success rate.

During surgery, the damaged cartilage and bone of the knee joint are removed. Then, the prosthesis is placed in the femur, tibia and / or the back of the kneecap.

The procedure can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia and sedation. It usually lasts about an hour and requires hospitalization about 4 days.

Nowadays there are different models of knee replacements for different patients depending on their age, weight, etc. Therefore, the patient must undergo a preliminary assessment to evaluate the specific characteristics of their intervention.

Patients should undergo a preliminary test to evaluate the specific characteristics of their intervention.
Furthermore, they must undergo a standard preoperative study that includes blood tests, electrocardiogram, etc.

Also, if they have any chronic illness or regularly take medications, especially anticoagulants, they should inform the surgeon before surgery.

An elastic compression bandage will be applied, and patients must wear it for at least three months after the operation.

Patients will start moving on the first day, carefully and following the doctors indications.

Patients can start moving on carefully since the first day. They should follow the instructions from the surgeon.

Patients will need a walking frame for the first days and crutches for later.

Correct rehabilitation is very important for the recovery. Spaincares offers patients the opportunity to do so at one of our specialist centres
