Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

DEFINITION:

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat and skin from the abdominal area while strengthening the muscles of the abdominal wall to achieve a flat stomach. Patients can practice in men and women and is quite common in women who have had several pregnancies.

DESCRIPTION:

Abdominoplasty involves separating the skin from the abdominal wall and remove the fat. After, patients muscles are tensed to repair the abdominal wall and excess skin is removed. The scar is located in the lower abdomen, so it is not visible or bathroom with internal laundry. The results of a tummy tuck are fully visible from the third or fourth month after surgery.

The surgery lasts between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the characteristics of the patient, and can be performed under general or spinal anesthesia.

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE

Patients should undergo a preliminary analysis to evaluate the characteristics of the person and decide the amount of fat to be removed.

Furthermore, they must undergo a standard preoperative study that includes blood tests, electrocardiogram, etc.

Also, if they have any chronic illness or regularly take medications, especially anticoagulants, they should inform the surgeon before surgery.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE:

Patients are advised to rest for a week and recover normal activities after the second or third week, avoiding the abdominal exercises and jumps. They must also use an abdominal binder for about a month. It is also recommended manual lymphatic drainage sessions until the edema disappears.
