Total hip replacement

DEFINITION:

Total hip replacement consists of replacing a hip joint that has been damaged by osteoarthrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, fractures, etc.

Hip joint replacement is one of the most usual and successful procedures.

DESCRIPTION:

The surgery replaces the two elements of the joint, the femoral head and the acetabulum.

The procedure usually lasts about one hour and requires about 4 days of hospitalisation.

Spaincares offers many different types of prostheses, depending on the patient's age, the morphology of his hip and the specific needs of each person.

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE:

Patients should undergo a preliminary test to evaluate the specific characteristics of their intervention.
Furthermore, they must undergo a standard preoperative study that includes blood tests, electrocardiogram, etc.

Also, if they have any chronic illness or regularly take medications, especially anticoagulants, they should inform the surgeon before surgery.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE:

Patients will wear a compression stocking to the hip for at least three months after the operation.

It’s good to sleep with a cushion placed between the legs to avoid a dislocation of their hip.

Patients must start moving carefully on the first day. They should follow the instructions from the surgeon.

Patients will need a walking frame for the first days and crutches later to avoid an overload in the joint.

A correct rehabilitation is very important for the recovery. Spaincares offers patients the opportunity to do so at one of our specialist centres.
