Glaucoma surgery. Express valve.

Glaucoma is an eye disease that damages the optic nerve progressively causing a reduction of the field of vision of the patient. It is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world, since it is a virtually asymptomatic and irreversible disease.

Glaucoma can be treated with eye drops to lower the eye pressure. if the medication does not work, a surgery will be necessary.

The purpose of glaucoma surgery is to reduce intraocular pressure. It is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia.

There are different techniques to treat it as surgeries (with or without devices) or laser treatment, depending on the characteristics of each case.

Laser treatment involves applying a laser beam to increase filtration, but it is a limited solution.

Glaucoma surgery creates a leak in the eye so that the liquid circulates better and decreases the intraocular pressure.

Sometimes, it is necessary a valve implantation. It is an artificial system to facilitate the elimination of aqueous humour.

Patients must previously visit the ophthalmologist to assess  their needs and make specific tests. In addition, they will be informed about the drops they need to use before surgery.

Depending on the technique used, the recovery will be very quick or patients will need a period of rest. In any case, patients should follow the medication guidelines set by the surgeon.
