Tonsillectomy (with or without adenoidectomy)

DEFINITION:

Tonsillectomy is the surgery to remove the tonsils. It is a very common intervention in both adults and pediatric patients.

DESCRIPTION:

The surgeon removes the tonsils through the patient's mouth with an instrument similar to a spoon. Tonsillectomy is usually done under general anesthesia and takes about 30 minutes.

It is often combined with adenoidectomy or removal of adenoids, because there usually problems on both of them.

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE

Patients should undergo a preliminary test to evaluate the specific characteristics of their intervention.

Furthermore, they must undergo a standard preoperative study that includes blood tests, electrocardiogram, etc.

Also, if they have any chronic illness or regularly take medications, especially anticoagulants, they should inform the surgeon before surgery.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE:

Patients may experience discomfort in the mouth and throat during the first days. It is also common to suffer nasal congestion, ear pain, bad breath and even a slight fever. Patients should eat soft and fresh foods like ice cream, gelatin, skimmed dairy products, soups, etc. and avoid orange juice and other acidic foods that can irritate the throat.

Complete recovery occurs two weeks after the procedure. During this period it is recommended that the patient avoid sick people.
