Knee ligament repair (Ligamentoplasty)

DEFINITION:

A Ligamentoplasty is a minimally invasive technique that repairs knee ligaments, usually the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments. This surgery is generally made in young people who practice people.

DESCRIPTION:

Ligamentoplasty consists in the arthroscopically replacement of the injured ligament by a healthy ligament. The new ligament may be constructed from a tendon of the patient or from a donor.

The surgery needs two small incisions in the knee and one bigger cut through which the tendons are removed and to create the graft that will replace the torn ligament.

Knee ligamentoplasty takes around one hour and generally needs local anesthesia. Patients usually spend a night in hospital.

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE

Patients should undergo a preliminary test to evaluate the specific characteristics of their intervention.
Furthermore, they must undergo a standard preoperative study that includes blood tests, electrocardiogram, etc.

Also, if they have any chronic illness or regularly take medications, especially anticoagulants, they should inform the surgeon before surgery.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE:

After the surgery patients may suffer some discomfort or swelling in their leg, but it will disappear in a few days.

Bandages will be removed a few days later, when patients have the first of the cures.

Patients can start walking from day one, although it is recommended to use crutches for a few days.

They also must wear an elastic compression bandage for at least three months and after that, it is recommended to wear a kneepad.

A correct rehabilitation is very important for the recovery. Spaincares offers patients the opportunity to do so at one of our specialist centres.
