Presbyopia surgery. Multifocal intraocular lens

Over the years, the crystalline loses its elasticity and the ability to focus on nearby objects is reduced. Patients with presbyopia have difficulty to read and appreciate the intensity of colours.

There are several surgical techniques for correcting presbyopia but the most common is crystalline lens replacement with a multifocal or trifocal intraocular lens.

Some centres use the Presbion or Supracor laser technique that involves carving the cornea to correct the vision defect. This intervention is not definitive, since patients may develop cataracts later, which will worsen their vision. All techniques are performed on an outpatient basis under topical anesthesia (drops).

Patients must previously visit the ophthalmologist to assess their needs and select the most appropriate technique.

In addition, they will be informed about the drops they need to use before surgery.

After the operation the patient can go home. They must remain at rest at least until the next day and avoid reading and efforts for at least one week.

The surgeon will tell them if they should take any medication or drops.
