Balón intragástrico (Proceso completo)

Intragastric balloon

The intragastric balloon is a non-surgical technique used for weight loss. It consists of introducing a balloon in the stomach for a while to reduce its capacity. The ball produces a constant feeling of satiety.

However, a supervised diet must be followed to change unhealthy habits and prevent to regain the weight when the balloon is removed.

The empty balloon is inserted through the mouth with an endoscope. Then, it is filled with between 400 and 700 cc of a sterile solution.

After approximately six months, the ball is emptied and removed by gastroscopy.

The procedure is performed under sedation in an operating theatre. It takes about an hour and does not require hospitalization.

Patients should undergo a preliminary test to evaluate the specific characteristics of their intervention.

Furthermore, they must undergo a standard preoperative study that includes blood tests, electrocardiogram, etc.

Also, if they have any chronic illness or regularly take medications, especially anticoagulants, they should inform the surgeon before surgery.

Patients can go home a few hours after the procedure. Since the next day, they can have drinks and then, they must follow the indicated diet.

Some patients have gastritis and nausea during the first days.
