Tumor ovárico por laparoscopia

Laparoscopic ovarian tomour removal

DEFINITION:

There are different types of ovarian tumors that may be benign or malignant. Depending on the case, ovarian tumors can be removed surgically, laparoscopically or treated with non-surgical techniques.

DESCRIPTION:

Laparoscopic removal of an ovarian tumor is performed through small incisions in the abdomen through which instruments are introduced. When the cyst is located, the surgeon removes it and takes a  sample of tissue for testing.

The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and lasts from one to two hours. Patients usually spend one day in hospital.

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE

Patients should undergo a preliminary analysis to evaluate the specific characteristics of their intervention. Furthermore, they must undergo a standard preoperative process that includes X-rays, blood tests, visiting the anesthetist, etc.

They should avoid smoking or drinking in the 48 hours before the procedure. Also, if they take blood-thinning medication regularly they must mention it to the surgeon before surgery.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE:

The recovery of this procedure is quick and painless. After a few days, patients can resume their normal life, taking certain precautions like avoiding abrupt movements and sports.

They should ask their doctor about the time to restore their sexual activity.
